Hiring outcomes

  • Base rateHiring outcomes

A base rate is how common an outcome is in the population being studied, and it changes what an accuracy figure means.

A rare outcome is inherently hard to predict well, and a method that simply never predicts it can still look highly accurate purely because the outcome was uncommon to begin with. Any accuracy figure reported without its base rate is close to uninterpretable, since the same accuracy number can represent a genuinely useful method or a useless one, depending entirely on how rare the outcome was in the first place.

    How it shows up

A test that predicts "no" for everyone can score ninety percent accuracy on an outcome that only occurs ten percent of the time, without having learned anything useful at all.

    Why it matters

Base rate is the single most common missing piece in a misleading accuracy claim, and asking for it is one of the fastest ways to tell a real evaluation from an incomplete one.
