Hiring outcomes

  • Job and supervisor satisfactionHiring outcomes

Job and supervisor satisfaction describe how content someone is with their work and with the specific person they report to, both distinct from how well they perform the work itself.

These are consistently the outcomes most strongly predicted by fit between a person and their role, manager, or organization, generally more strongly than fit predicts raw performance. A hiring approach built around fit is, in an important sense, more directly a satisfaction and retention tool than a performance tool, and being clear about which outcome is being predicted matters for how the result should be used.

    How it shows up

Two people doing equally strong work can have very different levels of satisfaction with their manager, and that difference often predicts who stays far better than either person's output does.

    Why it matters

Satisfaction and retention are frequently sold as performance benefits when the evidence more directly supports them as their own outcome, worth predicting in their own right.

See what predicts whether you'll want to stay.
