Hiring outcomes

  • The five conditionsHiring outcomes

A hire that lasts tends to satisfy five conditions at once: the person delivers what the role requires, gets along with colleagues and their manager, endures ordinary pressure, wants to stay, and carries no hidden trait that quietly erodes trust over time.

Each of these five is a genuinely different requirement, and a candidate can clear some while missing others. Someone can deliver excellent work and still leave within months because they don't want to stay. Someone can get along well with everyone and still carry a trait that eventually causes real damage. Treating the five as one blended question, "is this a good hire," tends to hide exactly the tradeoff that matters.

    How it shows up

A hiring conversation that only asks "can they do the job" is really asking about one of five conditions, while leaving the other four unexamined until they show up as a problem later.

    Why it matters

Naming the five conditions separately makes it possible to ask a more specific, more useful question than "will this work out," which is really five different questions bundled into one.

See how you measure up across more than just the obvious one.
