Company culture

  • Competing Values FrameworkCompany culture

The Competing Values Framework is a widely used model of organizational culture, placing a company on two axes: flexibility versus stability and control, and internal versus external focus.

The two axes generate four culture profiles, and no real organization is a pure example of just one. The useful output is the balance across all four, not a single label, since most companies are a genuine mix that shifts depending on which part of the business is being described.

    How it shows up

A single company can look highly collaborative in how its teams work day to day and highly control-oriented in how its finance function operates, and the framework is built to hold both at once rather than forcing one label.

    Why it matters

Describing a company's culture as one word, "innovative" or "structured," almost always oversimplifies it. The framework's real value is in showing the mix, not picking a winner.
