Speech & model terms

  • Vocal signalsSpeech & model terms

Vocal signals are the acoustic properties of speech, everything about how something is said rather than what's said: pitch, rhythm, resonance, and related qualities of the sound itself.

    Two layers of information

Speech carries two layers of information at once. One is the content, the words themselves and what they mean. The other is delivery, the acoustic shape the words are carried in. Vocal signals are that second layer: measurable properties of the sound wave that exist independent of the words being spoken, and that speech science has studied for well over a century.

    How it shows up

The same sentence, "I think this will work," carries different information depending on its vocal signals: said quickly and evenly versus slowly with hesitation is the same content wrapped in a very different delivery.

    Why it matters at Mappa

Our audio encoder reads vocal signals as one of two channels in the pipeline, alongside a text encoder that reads content. This is a live area of research generally, and any claim about exactly what a system detects and how reliably deserves scrutiny rather than a big round number.
