Foundational concepts

  • Psychological safetyFoundational concepts

Psychological safety is a team-level belief that it's safe to take interpersonal risks, speak up, admit a mistake, or challenge an idea, without fear of punishment or humiliation. The concept was popularized by Amy Edmondson's research on teams.

Unlike most constructs discussed here, psychological safety is measured at the team level, not the individual level. It describes a shared climate rather than a personal trait, which makes it a genuinely different kind of measurement problem.

    How it shows up

A meeting with high psychological safety includes people questioning a decision out loud. A meeting without it produces agreement in the room and different opinions afterward, privately.

    Why it matters

A team with excellent individual talent and low psychological safety often underperforms a less individually talented team that has it, a reminder that no hire is assessed in a vacuum.
