Company culture

  • FirmographicsCompany culture

Firmographics are the observable facts about a company: its size, stage, funding, sector, and structure.

Firmographics are attractive as a stand-in for company culture because they're cheap to obtain and available for nearly any company. But firmographic data can't distinguish a genuinely collaborative company from a merely small one, since the same markers, few employees, early stage, founder-led, describe both. Nor can firmographics distinguish a company's stated values from the values it practices day to day.

    How it shows up

A ten-person startup can look identical to another ten-person startup on every firmographic measure and still have completely different lived cultures, a gap firmographics alone can't close.

    Why it matters

Firmographics are useful and easy to gather, but they're a proxy for culture, not a direct measure of it, and treating them as equivalent is a common, understandable mistake.

See what distinguishes your working style, beyond the basic facts.
