Assessment instruments

  • Big Five InventoryAssessment instruments

The Big Five Inventory, or BFI, is a shorter, widely used published questionnaire measuring the Big Five personality factors, developed by John and Srivastava as a more efficient alternative to longer instruments.

The BFI trades some of the facet-level detail of longer instruments like the NEO-PI-R for brevity, which makes it popular in large-scale research where survey length matters. That brevity comes at some cost to diagnostic precision.

    How it shows up

A shorter instrument is easier to deploy at scale, in a large research study or a quick screening step, but it gives up some of the resolution a longer, facet-level instrument provides.

    Why it matters

It's a clean illustration of how measurement length and measurement depth trade against each other, a trade-off every assessment has to make somewhere.
