    BIS/BAS is a published instrument measuring sensitivity to punishment and threat on one scale, and sensitivity to reward across three related scales.

    Two independent systems

    The underlying idea is that people differ in how strongly two separate motivational systems respond: a behavioral inhibition system, tuned to threat and punishment, and a behavioral activation system, tuned to reward and opportunity. These aren't opposite ends of one line. Someone can be highly sensitive to both, or to neither, because the two systems are measured independently.

    How it shows up

    Two equally hardworking people can be running on entirely different fuel, one avoiding the discomfort of falling behind, the other chasing the payoff of getting ahead, and that difference shapes what kind of incentive or feedback actually moves them.
