Assessment instruments

  • PVQAssessment instruments

The PVQ is a published instrument measuring ten basic personal values, organized around what a person is fundamentally motivated by, not what they say they care about.

    SourceSchwartz, S. H., et al. (2001). Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 32(5).

    A circular structure

Developed from Shalom Schwartz's theory of basic human values, the PVQ doesn't ask people to rate abstract concepts directly. It presents brief portraits of people with different priorities and asks how similar the respondent is to each one, which produces a more behaviorally grounded read than asking "how much do you value achievement" outright. The ten values arrange into a circular structure, where adjacent values tend to go together and opposite values tend to trade off against each other.

    How it shows up

Someone who prioritizes stimulation and self-direction tends to be uncomfortable in an environment built around tradition and conformity, not because either side is wrong, but because the two clusters of values pull in different directions by design.

    Why it matters at Mappa

Values are the clearest case in the whole model where what matters is congruence, not level. A high score on any single value in isolation says very little; what predicts whether someone wants to stay somewhere is how well their values match the environment's.
