Company culture

  • Stated versus practiced valuesCompany culture

Stated values are what a company says it stands for. Practiced values are what happens day to day. The gap between the two is often the most consequential thing a prospective hire can't see from the outside.

Nearly every company can produce a values statement, and most of them sound similar to each other: collaboration, integrity, innovation. What varies enormously is whether those words describe how decisions get made under pressure, which is precisely the thing a values page can't reveal on its own.

    How it shows up

A company can state that it values work-life balance while its actual promotion patterns reward the opposite, and an employee only discovers the gap after joining.

    Why it matters

The distance between what a company says and what it does is exactly the kind of thing worth measuring rather than taking on faith, since the stated version is, by definition, the version every company already agrees to say out loud.
