Assessment instruments

  • DISCAssessment instruments

DISC is a behavioral-style framework describing people across four dimensions, Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness, originally based on William Marston's 1920s theory of emotions.

DISC is popular in sales and corporate training contexts, but it was built as a theory of emotional expression, not personality structure, and it hasn't been through the same rigorous, peer-reviewed psychometric validation that instruments in the Big Five family have.

    How it shows up

DISC shows up most often as a color-coded profile handed out in a sales training, sorting a room into four broad styles for the rest of the session.

    Why it matters

Not every framework popular in a training room has been through the same peer-review process as the instruments in the academic literature, and that difference is worth knowing before it factors into a hiring decision.
