Formants are the resonant frequencies of the vocal tract that give vowels their distinct, recognizable character.

    Part of Vocal signals →

Every vowel has a signature shape made up of several formants, and it's this specific pattern of resonant frequencies, not pitch, that lets a listener tell an "ah" from an "ee" regardless of who is speaking or at what pitch. Formants are one of the building blocks that make resonance measurable rather than just an impression.

    How it shows up

Formants are why a whispered vowel is still recognizable as that vowel, even with no pitch present to carry it.

    Why it matters

Formants are one of the most extensively studied objects in acoustic phonetics, and they're the specific mechanism behind what a listener experiences more generally as resonance and timbre.

See what shapes your vocal timbre, beyond pitch.
