Rhythm is the timing pattern of speech: how syllables, pauses, and phrases are paced relative to each other.

    Part of Vocal signals

    Distinct from speed

Every language and every speaker has a characteristic rhythm, built from the length of sounds, the placement of pauses, and how evenly or unevenly speech is paced. Rhythm is distinct from speed; two people can talk at the same overall rate and have noticeably different rhythms, because rhythm is about the pattern of timing, not just how fast the words come out.

    How it shows up

A speaker who pauses deliberately before a key point uses rhythm to create emphasis without changing a single word. A rushed, evenly paced delivery with no variation can undercut the same point, even if the content is identical.

    Why it matters at Mappa

Rhythm is a well-established object of study in speech science, part of what makes speech sound natural, deliberate, hesitant, or rushed, independent of word choice.
