    The IPIP interpersonal circumplex measures interpersonal style across eight octants arranged around two axes: dominance and warmth.

    A circle, not a line

    Rather than describing interpersonal style as a single line from introverted to extraverted, the circumplex places it on a circle, where any style can be described by how dominant or submissive it is, and how warm or cold. The eight octants are evenly spaced points on that circle, each a blend of the two underlying axes, and adjacent octants share more in common than opposite ones.

    How it shows up

    Two people can both be described loosely as "confident," and land in very different places on the circumplex: one warm and dominant, comfortable leading with people alongside them, the other cold and dominant, comfortable leading regardless of how people feel about it.

    Why it matters at Mappa

    IPIP-IPC addresses whether someone gets along with colleagues and manager, one of the five conditions behind a hire that lasts. It's also where our clearest complementarity finding lives: people tend to work best with similarity on warmth and difference on dominance.
