Speech & model terms

  • TranscriptionSpeech & model terms

Transcription is the conversion of speech into text, the first processing step any voice-based system has to perform.

Transcription quality sets a ceiling on everything downstream. If a word is transcribed incorrectly, every later step that depends on the text, reading content, understanding meaning, inherits that error, no matter how sophisticated the steps after it are.

    How it shows up

A single mistranscribed word in a key sentence can shift how the rest of that sentence is read, which is why transcription accuracy matters more than it might seem for a step that sounds purely mechanical.

    Why it matters

Transcription is the least glamorous part of any voice pipeline and one of the most consequential, since nothing built on top of it can be more accurate than the text it starts from.
