Speech & model terms

  • PitchSpeech & model terms

Pitch is the perceived highness or lowness of a voice, and it's driven primarily by fundamental frequency, how fast the vocal folds vibrate.

    Part of Vocal signals

Two ways of describing the same thing

Pitch and fundamental frequency are effectively the same thing described two ways: fundamental frequency is the physical measurement, and pitch is what a listener perceives from it. Pitch isn't fixed; it moves constantly within a single sentence, and that movement, not just the average level, is part of what carries meaning.

    How it shows up

A rising pitch at the end of a sentence often signals a question, even without a question mark's worth of grammar to back it up. A flat, unchanging pitch across a long stretch of speech tends to read as monotone or disengaged, regardless of the words being said.

    Why it matters at Mappa

Pitch is one of the more extensively studied vocal signals in speech science, well documented as a carrier of emphasis, emotion, and structure in speech, independent of the specific words used.
