Speech & model terms

  • ResonanceSpeech & model terms

Resonance is how sound is shaped as it passes through the vocal tract, contributing to a voice's characteristic timbre, the quality that makes a voice recognizable independent of its pitch or words.

    Part of Vocal signals

    Beyond pitch

Two people can speak at the exact same pitch and still sound clearly different, because resonance shapes the sound in ways pitch doesn't capture. It's part of what makes a voice identifiable as a specific person's voice, even over the phone, even saying something entirely new.

    How it shows up

Resonance is part of why a familiar voice is recognizable within a word or two, well before the listener has processed any of the content being said.

    Why it matters at Mappa

Resonance and related timbral qualities are a well-studied part of what a voice carries beyond its literal words, and part of the broader acoustic signal our audio encoder is built to read.
