Speech & model terms

  • Vocal intensitySpeech & model terms

Vocal intensity is the measured loudness of speech, an acoustic property distinct from a listener's subjective impression of how loud someone seems.

Intensity is measured directly from the sound wave, in decibels, rather than estimated by ear. It varies constantly within a single sentence, and those variations, not just the average level, carry meaning: a rise in intensity on a specific word functions much like underlining it.

    How it shows up

A word spoken with a spike in intensity mid-sentence reads as emphasized, even without any change to the word itself.

    Why it matters

Vocal intensity is one of the most directly measurable acoustic properties of speech, since it maps to a physical quantity rather than a purely subjective judgment.

Find out how your own intensity shifts when it counts.
