Psychometrics

  • Latent traitPsychometrics

A latent trait is the underlying quantity that a set of survey answers is trying to estimate, distinct from the raw answers themselves.

Two people can answer a set of questions differently and still land at a similar estimated level on the underlying trait, or answer similarly and land at different levels, depending on which specific questions they agreed with and how much information each one carries. The latent trait is the quantity researchers care about; the raw answers are just the evidence used to estimate it.

    How it shows up

A raw questionnaire total and a latent trait estimate can rank two people differently, because the estimate accounts for which specific items were answered a certain way, not just how many.

    Why it matters

Treating a raw total as if it were the trait itself skips a step that genuinely changes the result, particularly for people who answer in less common patterns.
