Foundational concepts

  • Locus of controlFoundational concepts

Locus of control is the degree to which a person believes outcomes in their life result from their own actions, an internal locus, versus external forces like luck or other people, an external locus. The construct comes from Julian Rotter's research.

It's one of the older constructs in personality and motivation research, predating most modern trait models, and it's still cited constantly in organizational behavior research today.

    How it shows up

An internal locus tends to take responsibility for a missed deadline and adjust the process behind it. An external locus more often points to circumstances outside their control.

    Why it matters

How someone assigns cause after something goes wrong says a great deal about what they'll change afterward, and whether they will at all.

Find out how you respond when something goes wrong.
