Foundational concepts

  • Growth mindsetFoundational concepts

Growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort, as distinct from a fixed mindset, which holds that they're largely innate. The term comes from Carol Dweck's research.

Growth mindset became hugely influential in education and has increasingly made its way into workplace training. Larger, later replications have generally found smaller effects than the original research suggested, and effects that vary considerably by context, which is worth knowing before treating it as a settled finding.

    How it shows up

A growth-mindset response to a setback treats it as information to act on. A fixed-mindset response treats the same setback as a verdict on ability.

    Why it matters

How someone responds to a setback is genuinely useful to understand about a colleague, whatever a particular scale ends up calling it.

See what a real setback reveals about how someone works.
