Foundational concepts

  • General cognitive abilityFoundational concepts

General cognitive ability, often shortened to "g," is the broad mental capacity underlying performance across a wide range of cognitive tasks: reasoning, problem-solving, and the speed of learning something new.

In the personnel-selection literature, general cognitive ability is one of the most consistently powerful predictors of job performance ever studied, particularly as a role's complexity increases. It's typically measured through standardized reasoning and problem-solving tasks rather than self-report questionnaires, which puts it in a fundamentally different category of measurement than personality traits.

    How it shows up

Two people with near-identical personality profiles can differ sharply in how quickly they pick up an unfamiliar system or spot an error buried in a spreadsheet, and that gap often has more to do with g than with any trait describing how they work.

    Why it matters

Cognitive ability and personality sit in different parts of the hiring conversation. One asks what someone can do; the other asks how they tend to do it. Treating a personality profile as a stand-in for either is a common, costly mistake.

    Often confused with personality

The two are frequently discussed in the same breath, but they answer different questions: personality describes tendencies, cognitive ability describes capacity.
