Speech & model terms

  • NasalitySpeech & model terms

Nasality, measured acoustically as nasalance, describes the degree to which sound resonates through the nasal cavity rather than the mouth during speech.

    Part of Vocal signals →

Some sounds are meant to be nasal, like "m" and "n," and some languages use nasality to distinguish words that would otherwise sound identical.

    How it shows up

A speaker with a cold often sounds less nasal than usual on nasal sounds, and more nasal than usual on everything else, a temporary shift in resonance rather than a permanent one.

    Why it matters

Nasality is a well-studied part of how resonance works in speech, and a good example of how a single acoustic property can be entirely typical in one context and worth noting in another.
