  • ShimmerSpeech & model terms

Shimmer is the cycle-to-cycle variation in the amplitude, or loudness, of vocal fold vibration, jitter's counterpart in the amplitude domain rather than the frequency domain.

Where jitter tracks small fluctuations in pitch cycle to cycle, shimmer tracks the same kind of fluctuation in loudness. The two are almost always studied together in clinical voice science, since both are standard acoustic measures used in assessing vocal-fold health and voice quality.

    How it shows up

A small, typical amount of shimmer is part of ordinary voice production. Elevated shimmer is one of the standard measures clinicians reference alongside jitter.

    Why it matters

Shimmer is one of the core measures in the acoustic study of voice quality, and it's typically reported alongside jitter rather than considered on its own.
