Foundational concepts

Psychometrics

  • ReliabilityPsychometrics

Reliability is whether a measure gives a consistent result when the same person is measured more than once, under similar conditions.

An unreliable measure can't be valid, because it isn't capturing anything stable enough to be measuring the right thing consistently. Reliability doesn't guarantee a measure is accurate, only that whatever it's picking up is being picked up consistently rather than by chance.

    How it shows up

A reliable measure gives a similar result for the same person on a Tuesday and a Friday. An unreliable one can swing meaningfully based on factors that have nothing to do with the trait being measured.

    Why it matters

Reliability is the floor beneath every other claim an instrument makes. Nothing built on top of an unreliable measure can be trusted, however sophisticated the scoring on top of it looks.

Find out what a stable, repeatable result looks like.
