Foundational concepts

  • Regulatory focusFoundational concepts

Regulatory focus is a motivational theory distinguishing promotion focus, oriented toward achieving gains and ideals, from prevention focus, oriented toward avoiding losses and meeting obligations. The theory comes from Tory Higgins's research.

Neither orientation is better in the abstract. Promotion focus and prevention focus each fit different kinds of work, which makes regulatory focus a genuinely situational construct rather than a good-or-bad one.

    How it shows up

A promotion-focused approach to a new project starts by asking what the best possible outcome looks like. A prevention-focused approach starts by asking what could go wrong first.

    Why it matters

Knowing which orientation someone defaults to says a lot about which kind of role, and which kind of manager, will bring out their best work.

Find out which way you default under pressure.
