Assessment instruments

  • RelatednessAssessment instruments

Relatedness is the need to feel connected to and cared for by others, satisfied through genuine belonging, and frustrated through exclusion or rejection.

    Part of BPN

The most social of the three

This need is the most directly social of the three, and its frustration in particular is one of the more consistent predictors of disengagement across the psychological needs literature.

    How it shows up

High relatedness satisfaction shows up as someone who feels genuinely part of a team. High relatedness frustration shows up as someone who feels like an outsider, even in a group that would describe them as included.

    Why it matters at Mappa

Relatedness frustration is a particularly hard signal to catch from the outside, since it's about a person's felt experience of belonging, not the objective facts of their inclusion.
