Assessment instruments

  • Dark TetradAssessment instruments

The Dark Tetrad extends the dark triad, narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy, by adding a fourth trait: sadism, the tendency to derive pleasure from others' suffering.

Sadism was proposed as a distinct fourth dimension after later research suggested it behaves differently from psychopathy rather than simply overlapping with it, though the four-trait model is less established in the published literature than the original three-trait dark triad.

    How it shows up

Sadism shows up specifically in deriving satisfaction from someone else's distress, a motive distinct from psychopathy's characteristic disregard for the consequences of one's actions.

    Why it matters

It's a useful illustration of how even well-established constructs keep getting tested and revised as new research comes in, rather than being fixed once and left alone.
