Foundational concepts

Psychometrics

  • ItemPsychometrics

An item is a single question or statement within a psychometric instrument, and it's the actual unit that psychometrics analyzes, not the total score.

A scale's properties, its reliability, its validity, its ability to distinguish people from one another, are built up from its individual items. Two instruments with the same number of questions can behave very differently depending on how well each item was written and tested before publication.

    How it shows up

A poorly worded item can pull everyone toward the same answer regardless of how they differ, contributing almost nothing to the final score even though it's counted the same as every other item.

    Why it matters

The quality of an instrument is really the quality of its items, added together, which is why published instruments go through extensive item-level testing before anyone trusts the total.
