Assessment instruments

  • Self-directionAssessment instruments

Self-direction is the value placed on independent thought and action, choosing, creating, and exploring on one's own terms.

    Part of PVQ

    About autonomy

It's one of the values most associated with autonomy: not just wanting freedom in the abstract, but actively valuing the process of figuring things out independently.

    How it shows up

High self-direction pushes back on being handed a rigid process and prefers to work out its own approach. Low self-direction is comfortable, sometimes more comfortable, inside clear structure set by someone else.

    Why it matters at Mappa

Self-direction is one of the clearest predictors of whether significant autonomy in a role feels like a gift or a burden.

Find out how much independence you actually want.
