Assessment instruments

  • NEO-PI-RAssessment instruments

The NEO-PI-R, or Revised NEO Personality Inventory, is a widely used, published instrument measuring the Big Five personality factors across thirty facets, six per factor.

Developed by Costa and McCrae, it's one of the most extensively validated personality instruments in the academic literature, and the instrument most other Big Five measures are benchmarked against.

    How it shows up

Two people can score identically on the broad factor of conscientiousness in the NEO-PI-R and differ meaningfully across its six underlying facets, the same logic that motivates facet-level reading in any six-factor personality model.

    Why it matters

The NEO-PI-R's thirty-facet structure is a useful reference point for why facet-level measurement matters generally. The same logic, more facets, more specific answers, shows up across multiple major instruments, not just one.

See what a facet-level read reveals that a single score can't.
