Assessment instruments

  • SD3Assessment instruments

SD3 is a published instrument measuring three risk-related traits, together known as the dark triad: narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy.

    SourceJones, D. N., & Paulhus, D. L. (2014). Assessment, 21(1).

    A common thread, different expressions

These three traits share a common thread, a willingness to prioritize self-interest at others' expense, but they express it differently: narcissism through grandiosity and entitlement, Machiavellianism through strategic manipulation, and psychopathy through impulsivity and low empathy. Published meta-analyses find these effects behave as main effects of the person, not as something that depends on who they're paired with.

    How it shows up

These traits rarely announce themselves directly. They show up in patterns over time: consistently redirected credit, calculated relationships, or a disregard for consequences that only becomes visible after several instances.

    Why it matters at Mappa

SD3 addresses whether a hire carries hidden risk, one of the five conditions behind a hire that lasts. It's used to screen, not to score: these traits enter as thresholds rather than as terms in an average, because much of what they predict is already carried by Honesty-Humility, and a single extreme value here matters more than an average standing across every trait.
