Foundational concepts

Psychometrics

  • Factor and facetPsychometrics

A factor is a broad personality dimension; facets are its more specific components. Conscientiousness is a factor, and organization, diligence, and prudence are examples of facets within it.

The relationship works like a category and its subcategories: a factor groups together facets that tend to move together, but two people with the same overall factor score can differ meaningfully across the specific facets that make it up. One person's conscientiousness might come from meticulous planning; another's might come from sheer persistence.

    How it shows up

Two colleagues can both be described as "conscientious" and manage their work in visibly different ways, one through structure, the other through sustained effort, because the same factor score can be built from different facets.

    Why it matters

Reading a factor alone can flatten two genuinely different people into one label. Reading the facets underneath it is what makes the difference visible.
