Hiring outcomes

  • First-year retentionHiring outcomes

First-year retention is whether a new hire is still in the role a year after starting, one of the more common outcomes used to evaluate whether a hire worked out.

Compared to alternatives like "quality of hire," which isn't consistently defined, or performance ratings, which arrive late and carry known rater effects, first-year retention is observable and recorded by default. It's a coarser measure than a detailed performance review, but it's real, and it's the same outcome that shows up in a company's own hiring data without extra instrumentation.

    How it shows up

A hire who leaves within a few months, regardless of how strong their skills were, represents a failure on this outcome even if every other signal about them looked good going in.

    Why it matters

An outcome only matters as a target if it can be observed and agreed on afterward. First-year retention clears that bar in a way that vaguer, more subjective outcomes often don't.
