Foundational concepts

  • GritFoundational concepts

Grit is perseverance and sustained passion toward long-term goals, a construct popularized by psychologist Angela Duckworth and measured with the Grit Scale.

Grit generated enormous public interest, particularly in education, as a predictor of achievement. The research picture is more contested than the popularity suggests: several meta-analyses find grit correlates highly with conscientiousness, high enough that some researchers question whether it captures anything conscientiousness doesn't already cover.

    How it shows up

Grit shows up as someone sticking with a difficult, multi-year goal through real setbacks, when a less gritty person would have pivoted to something else.

    Why it matters

Grit is a useful case study in how a construct can be genuinely popular and genuinely disputed at the same time. Its overlap with conscientiousness is exactly the kind of question worth asking before treating a new label as a new finding.

    Often confused with conscientiousness

The overlap between the two is large enough in the published literature that distinguishing them requires care.
