Hiring outcomes

  • Job performanceHiring outcomes

Job performance is how well someone does the actual work of a role, as distinct from whether they're satisfied in it or intend to stay.

In the personnel-selection literature, job performance and job satisfaction are consistently found to have different predictors. Traits like conscientiousness and proactive personality predict performance more strongly than they predict satisfaction, while traits related to fit predict satisfaction and retention more strongly than they predict performance. Treating the two as the same outcome, or assuming one predictor set covers both, is a common and costly simplification.

    How it shows up

A hire can be genuinely satisfied, well liked, and planning to stay for years, while performing only adequately at the actual work, and the reverse pattern shows up just as often.

    Why it matters

Naming which outcome a claim is about, performance specifically, rather than satisfaction or retention, is the difference between a precise statement and a vague one.
