Assessment instruments

  • Interpersonal Reactivity IndexAssessment instruments

The Interpersonal Reactivity Index, or IRI, is a widely used, published instrument measuring empathy across four distinct dimensions: perspective-taking, fantasy, empathic concern, and personal distress.

Developed by Mark Davis, the IRI treats empathy as multidimensional rather than a single trait, separating a cognitive component, understanding another person's perspective, from an emotional one, feeling distress or concern in response to their experience.

    How it shows up

Someone can score high on perspective-taking, genuinely understanding why another person feels a certain way, while scoring lower on empathic concern, not feeling moved to do much about it.

    Why it matters

It's a good example of how a single everyday word, empathy, splits into several measurably different capacities once it's studied closely, a pattern that shows up across most constructs in this field.

Find out what your own empathy is made of.
