Speech & model terms

  • Pitch rangeSpeech & model terms

Pitch range is the spread between the highest and lowest pitch a person uses across a stretch of speech, distinct from their average pitch level.

Two speakers can share an identical average pitch and sound completely different because one uses a wide pitch range, moving expressively between highs and lows, while the other stays close to a narrow band around that average. A narrow pitch range is a large part of what makes speech sound monotone, regardless of the average pitch itself.

    How it shows up

A wide pitch range reads as expressive or animated. A narrow pitch range, even at a perfectly normal average pitch, reads as flat or subdued.

    Why it matters

Pitch range is often a better predictor of how animated or flat someone sounds than their average pitch is, which is why the two are studied as separate measures rather than one.
