Psychometrics

  • NormingPsychometrics

Norming is the process of placing a raw score on an interpretable scale by comparing it to a reference population, so that a number means something beyond itself.

A score with no reference population is close to meaningless: knowing someone scored a seven out of ten on a trait tells you nothing until you know what a seven corresponds to among people generally. Norming supplies that reference point, and how it's constructed, fixed once, or recalculated as new people are added, has real consequences for whether scores stay comparable over time.

    How it shows up

A norming reference that shifts as a database grows can mean someone's score changes without them answering anything new, purely because the comparison group changed underneath them.

    Why it matters

A fixed, stable reference point is what lets a score mean the same thing this year as it did last year, and it's a detail that's easy to get wrong without anyone noticing for a long time.
