Assessment instruments

  • StrengthsFinderAssessment instruments

StrengthsFinder, now called CliftonStrengths, is a Gallup-developed assessment identifying a person's top talent themes from a set of thirty-four, built around a strengths-based philosophy of development rather than a comprehensive personality model.

Unlike MBTI, DISC, or the Enneagram, StrengthsFinder has some published validation research behind it, though most of that research has come from Gallup itself rather than independent academic sources, which is worth weighing when deciding how much confidence to place in it.

    How it shows up

StrengthsFinder shows up as a ranked list of themes, like Strategic or Woo, that a person is encouraged to lean into rather than work around.

    Why it matters

It's a good reminder that a tool built to highlight what someone does well is solving a different problem than a tool built to predict how they'll perform in a specific role, even when the two get used interchangeably in practice.

    See what predicting fit requires.
