Jitter is the cycle-to-cycle variation in the frequency of vocal fold vibration, a small, involuntary fluctuation present in every voice.

    Part of Vocal signals →

Every voice jitters to some degree; a completely jitter-free voice would sound artificial rather than natural. Jitter is measured in clinical voice science primarily as an indicator of vocal-fold stability, and it's one of the standard acoustic measures used in assessing dysphonia and other voice disorders.

    How it shows up

A small, typical amount of jitter is part of what makes a voice sound human rather than synthesized. Elevated jitter, well outside the typical range, is one of several signals clinicians use when assessing vocal-fold function.

    Why it matters

Jitter is a foundational measure in acoustic phonetics, and understanding it is part of understanding what makes a voice sound the way it does, beyond pitch and loudness alone.
